We are so excited to kick off In The Garden Thursdays! I
thought we would start with a really amazing kit from The Zen Succulent! Owned
by Megan George and her mother Margaret, this kit really stands out!
I was given the chance to review one of their awesome
terrarium kits! The All-in-ZEN DIY Terrarium Kit -Succulent Terrarium Kit with Vase & Plants Included. Needless to say, I was so excited. Being a
plant lover, I thought how neat this would be for a gift for someone like me.
Not only was it beautiful and unique, it was one of the more
complete terrarium kits I have seen. I loved the plants that they sent too! Now
for the break down:
Shipping: This was EXTREMELY well packaged. Everything
arrived in perfect condition. No crushed plants and no broken pieces etc.…
Directions: There was a complete step-by-step set up page
for you. Which was excellent for me, because I have never once put together a
terrarium. I have always bought them pre-made.
Plant Quality: I was extremely surprised! I will be honest
about that. I made arrangements for someone to be home and get the package from
the mailman, since it was the coldest week we have had here in Cleveland, when
it was scheduled to be delivered. Think -7 with the wind chill, I thought to
myself “Oh yeah, that is perfect weather
for succulents to be delivered!”…. Not lol. I happened to come home early from
work and was able to catch the mailman, and unpack them within a matter of
minutes. The plants were in perfect shape!! Not one broken leaf on any of them!
Supplies: There was plenty to start the terrarium, I think I
messed up and didn’t save enough sand for the top of the terrarium, but that
was my mistake. I’ll just look locally for some to match it!
Vase: I loved the style of it, and it was easy to get your
hands into to put the plants in it.
All in all, this company has a great product! Perfect for
gift giving, or pick up a couple for yourself! I am honestly trying to figure
out where I could put another one if I bought it ;)

- When did you start your business? - I started " the ZEN Succulent" with my mother in May 2012. She had an idea to make terrariums as a fun thing to do on afternoon and planned to give them out as gifts for family members. After making a few arrangements and handing them out, we began to hear amazingly warm compliments from family, friends and soon friends of friends on our arrangements look and design. From that, we carefully and excitedly decided to make the leap and provide our terrarium arrangements to a wider audience. Our first public showing was a local homemade crafting expo and we completed sold out of all our terrarium arrangements, 35 various sized terrariums, in less than 4 hours! From that great first showing, we decided to grow our business with a sold online presence through Etsy.com, growing our business beyond terrarium arrangements, by adding but various sized DIY kits, vase options and a wide selection of succulent and cactus offerings.
- Why choose terrariums as a product? - I have always grown up around plants in and around our family home in North Carolina. It was a "no brainier" for us to blend our passion for crafting and plants together, and the terrariums are that perfect blend.
- How did you get your name? - When we, my mother and I, were seriously considering about taking our hobby of making terrarium arrangements into an actual small business, we were bouncing around for days different names for the company. I began to think about how I wanted our customers to fell when they look at our terrarium and the word " peace " suddenly came to mind. I wanted our customers to fell " at peace " when looking at the various succulents, cactus, wood and pebbles arranged in beautiful vases, like a little world.... felling at peace… feeling Zen. From that thought, " The ZEN Succulent" was born.
